At Birthright, we pride ourselves in being available to our women 24/7. We have an on-call obstetrician schedule for labour and obstetric emergencies.

To allow us to provide sustainable and safe care for you and your baby, we ask that you call the on-call obstetrician for pregnancy-related emergencies only, or if you are in labour.

Here are the common major reasons you should call :

  • Signs of labour : FROM 37 weeks – painful,regular contractions (every 5-10mins, lasting at least 60s each) : BEFORE 37 weeks – painful contractions
  • Fluid leaking/gushing vaginally, especially if the colour is green/brown
  • Any vaginal bleeding
  • Severe or constant abdominal pain, with a tight abdomen
  • Reduced/ absent baby movements
  • Fall with direct hit onto your abdomen
  • Any other specific symptoms that we have discussed with you

Please contact your GP for all non-pregnancy related issues, such as :

  • coughs/ cold/ sore throat/headaches/ rash/ muscle pain/tiredness
  • food poisoning
  • constipation
  • non-pregnancy-related blood tests/investigations
  • repeat prescriptions for regular/long term medications

Seek urgent medical care via your GP or nearest Emergency Department/ After hours clinic for urgent non-pregnancy related issues, such as :

  • severe illnesses causing difficulty breathing, such as Covid/influenza
  • chest pain
  • sudden collapse
  • motor vehicle accident or any trauma with suspected injury, eg sprain/ fractures
  • accidental ingestion of drugs/ unintended foods/overdosing of medications with concerning symptoms.

For all non-urgent pregnancy-related issues, please call or email reception during working hours. Or feel free to discuss them during your antenatal appointments. For example:

  • Repeat script for medication started in pregnancy
  • Request or follow up of routine pregnancy blood tests / scan and results
  • Advice on travel/exercise/food/immunisations
  • Medical certificate for pregnancy-related issues
